Exploring the Beauty of Chegaga Desert, Morocco
Discovering the Mystical Desert of Chegaga
With its sweeping dunes, awe-inspiring views, and endless sky, my incredible experience trekking through one of the most beautiful landscapes was truly an unforgettable journey. It was an adventure that offered a truly immersive escape into nature and a chance to explore a uniquely untamed environment.
The mystical desert of Chegaga is a place like no other. As I embarked on this unforgettable trekking adventure with my group, I would soon discover the intense sensation of being alone and surrounded by the raw beauty and awe-inspiring landscapes that make this desert so special, while in the middle of my fellow trekkers. We were a large group of 30, divided into 3 groups of 10 each with our own guides. The caravan also consisted of about 15 camels and the rest of the support team that transported our tents, food, bedding, water, etc. The journey really begins as you leave behind the comforts of modern life and venture into the vast expanse of sand dunes that stretch as far as the eye can see. With each step, you'll feel the power and immensity of nature, as the wind whisks through the desert, creating ever-changing patterns on the dunes.
We began our trek in the mountains of Zagora. The first task, make it up and over the mountain pass. This was not a small feat, the steep, rocky path was not a quick one, but it certainly called for a moment of celebration once we reached the top. The desert in Morocco has many different types of landscapes including flat, rocky, mountainous, sandy, arid, green, dusty. As we delved deeper into the desert, we witnessed the incredible colors that adorn the landscape, from the fiery oranges of the sunset to the deep purples of the night sky. The silence of the desert enveloped us, creating a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to find in the modern world. We had the opportunity to explore hidden valleys and stumble upon hidden oases.
Exploring the Remote Landscapes of Chegaga
Our trekking experience lasted a total of 6 days, really allowing us to connect with ourselves and with each other during breaks. Each of us taking the time to develop our own stride and pace, it was the singular most defining aspects…being at once alone and in a group. Trekking through that vast and untamed wilderness, with our giudes who know that landscape as well as they know their own names, was an opportunity to explore some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth.
From the flattest, rockiest, seemingly barren flats to the towering sand dunes that seem to touch the sky…the Moroccan Sahara is a paradise for adventure seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. We were filled with a sense of wonder and awe as we witnessed the beauty of this untouched wilderness.
Chegaga is also home to unique geological formations, such as rocky plateaus and deep canyons. As we navigated through these rugged terrains, we were rewarded with breathtaking views and a sense of accomplishment. Exploring the remote landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. It is truly the definition stepping off the beaten path and immersing yourself in the natural wonders of the desert.
Campsite Nights: Bedouin Tents and Starry Skies
As the sun set over the vast expanse of the Chegaga Desert, we found ourselves in a truly magical setting. Each evening as we made our way to our camp spot for the night, we were met with sleeping tents already in place, the kitchen fire hot, camels resting and fed. Every evening we came together for dinner and afterwards were treated to traditional music, dancing and time for relaxing. This is an experience like no other. As the moon rose and the stars made their appearance known brightly, they put on a show like no other.
Let me just say that this was by no means a “glamping” experience. It was indeed a simple, one-with-nature type of experience. The Bedouin tents provided were comfortable and simple, giving us a glimpse into the nomadic way of life. There were no toilets, showers or other comforts of that sort along the way. Baby wipes became the most important of the supplies we brought along. And surprisingly, I didn’t mind this at all. I’m not normally a roughing it type of girl, but this was just enough. I truly believe that these types of experiences help to ground me and keep me grateful for the comforts that I have on a daily basis.
As darkness falls, the true beauty of the desert reveals itself. The clear, unpolluted skies of the Chegaga Desert are a stargazer's dream, offering an incredible opportunity to witness the Milky Way in all its glory. As we laid on our bedouin mats and looked up at the vast expanse above, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder, completely immersed in the beauty of the universe. The crackling of the fire and the gentle desert breeze create a peaceful ambiance that has stayed with me.
Crossing Dunes and Oasis for an Unforgettable Experience
As we began to meet the end of the flat, rocky areas of Chegaga, we could see the massive towering sand dunes rising in the distance. Stretching out before me as far as the eye can see. As the landscape slowly started to transition, it was a truly awe-inspiring sight that left me in awe of the power and beauty of nature.
Taking off my shoes and feeling the soft warm sand beneath my feet, we arrived a little behind the rest of the group and made our way to camp only by the light of the moon. It was truly remarkable to know that our guides navigate this landscape either by day or night. The striking contrast between day and night, feeling the strong desert sun on my skin, and the cool air at night is yet another discovery of the hidden treasures of the desert. What appears at first sight to be a vast empty landscape is actually full of life.
The lush fields of greenery nestled amidst the sand. Witnessing the camels and their owners criscrossing the landscape, maintaining their traditional way of life provides a peek into another world that many will never experience. It's a chance to gain a deeper understanding of the desert and its people.
This was by far one of the most magnificent adventures I have ever been on to date. If you are an adventurer at heart, love the outdoors, love hiking, then this is the something that you should absolutely add to your list of must-dos. Why? Because Chegaga desert or Erg Chegaga is the largest in Morocco and provides the best chance to experience the region that is mostly unspoiled. It is renowned for its vast sand dunes, some of which can reach impressive heights of 50m, making it a popular destination for desert enthusiasts and travelers seeking an authentic Sahara experience. It’s simply stunning…with a golden sand sea, which stretches across the horizon as far as the eye can see. Unlike other desert areas, like Merzouga, Chegaga remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, offering visitors a tranquil and serene environment to explore. You won’t find any hotels here.
The desert is also home to a few nomadic communities, adding to its cultural richness. You can immerse yourself in the desert's unique way of life, enjoying the starlit desert skies.
Preparing for A Trekking Adventure in Chegaga
Firstly, make sure you are physically prepared. The trek through the desert can be demanding, with long hours of walking in varied conditions. Our trek was in fall, which is the prefect time of year. Not too hot during the day and not too cold during the night. Engage in regular exercise and build up your stamina and endurance before the trip. It's also a good idea to consult with a doctor before undertaking any physically demanding activity.
Next, pack wisely. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing that will protect you from the sun, sand and cool temperatures at night. Don't forget essentials such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. It's also important to bring a good pair of walking shoes or boots that provide support and traction in rocky or sandy terrain to ensure stability on the uneven desert ground. It’s also a good idea to make sure the shoes or boots are one size bigger than normal. This will help protect your toes from pushing up against the front of your shoes. With each step your foot slides forward and over the course of a couple of days, this can cause you to injure your toenails. I know this first hand.
Hydration is key in the desert, so make sure to bring plenty of water. It's recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water per day to stay hydrated. Additionally, hydration salts, light snacks will sustain you in between meals during the trek.
Finally, make sure to respect the environment. The desert is a fragile ecosystem, so take care not to disturb or damage the natural surroundings. Take any trash with you or give it to your guides and let them dispose of it for you.
What to Pack for a Chegaga Desert Trekking Tour

First and foremost, prioritize lightweight, breathable clothing that will protect you from the harsh sun and varied conditions. Opt for long-sleeved shirts and pants made of moisture-wicking fabric to keep you cool and protect your skin from the sun's rays. Don't forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense desert sun. Even in fall or winter the sun is strong, even though the air temperature isn’t high. Pack high-energy snacks and lightweight meals to keep your energy levels up during the journey.Other essential items to bring include a daypack, headlamp or flashlight and a camera to capture the breathtaking landscapes.
Remember to pack lightly as the camels will not only carry your belongings but also the camping supplies, so minimizing their load is important. Leave unnecessary items behind and opt for multi-purpose items whenever possible.
Be prepared for the temperature fluctuations in the desert. Pack lightweight, warm layers to stay comfortable during the chilly desert nights.
Lastly, listen to your body and take breaks as needed. Trekking through the desert can be physically demanding, so it's important to pace yourself and not push beyond your limits. Take breaks in the shade, stay hydrated, and listen to your guide's advice.
